Sandy Slemp

Sandy Slemp (ADAPT, ADA)

Certified Competition Adjudicator: Tap; Jazz; Lyrical; Contemporary; Song and Dance; Musical Theatre; Hip Hop; Acro Dance

Sandy is a fully-qualified examiner/teacher who travels to all corners of Canada performing examinations in the ADAPT syllabus.

With more than 35 years of experience in the dance industry, as a teacher and choreographer, Sandy continues to study to keep up with the ever-changing world of dance. Most recently, Sandy received her ADA Certified Adjudicator from the Acro Dance Teachers Association.

After receiving her formal training in Calgary, AB, Sandy opened and operated a successful dance studio for 27 years, where she nurtured and shaped young dancers in the classes she taught. Sandy immersed herself with the art of teaching all types of dance, specializing in tap, jazz and lyrical.

Sandy helped her students develop and master the skill of dance. Numerous students she has taught have gone onto open their own studios in Calgary, where Sandy has watched them become successful business owners and dance teachers. Many of her students went on to train at many prestigious schools in Canada and the US. Some of her students have made a profession in dancing — many starting their careers as dancers on cruise ships, such as Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, and Disney. From there, some have taken their dance careers on different paths and work in major motion pictures — American Beauty, Austin Powers Gold Member, Euphoria, Glow, American Music Awards, Britney Spears, and Prince. As a teacher, Sandy loved immersing herself in dance and was honoured to share her craft with her students.

Throughout Sandy’s dance training and her teaching, Brian Foley has been her mentor. She is now an examiner for the ADAPT syllabus under his direction. Her positive and upbeat teaching style has made her an excellent motivator and mentor herself, which she brings when adjudicating at competitions — Dance Power, Peak Invitational Dance Competition and Candance, to name a few. She understands how much time, effort, and dedication that students, teachers, and even parents, have to put into preparing for the competitive season. As an examiner, Sandy is able to share her love of dance with these students across Canada.

Though Sandy no longer owns a dance studio, she is still involved with the world of dance, outside of the competitions. Sandy is a travel consultant for Destinations Travel & Events Inc. She now takes dancers to the world — bringing Canadian dance studios to different locations to learn about its dance culture. Sandy has been providing quality experiences to young dancers in exciting countries — Italy, Spain, Mexico, and has watched dancers learn from professional on Broadway.

Sandy believes that every dancer should follow their heart — and she will be there to encourage them, cheer them on, and remind them to dance big!
